Coffee Alternatives

Sometimes the spookiest day of October is not Halloween, but the day your morning alarm sounds and you discover it’s still pitch black outside. When the sun is snoozing but hibernation isn’t an option for you, it can be tempting to reach for a cup or two of coffee to jumpstart your energy. If you are looking to cut back on caffeine intake, or just want to increase your mindfulness through the season change, try out a few of our favorite coffee alternatives!

If you love the taste….

Dandy Blend

Dandy Blend, an “herbal coffee substitute that features smoothness and texture of real coffee,” is an excellent choice if what you love about your daily coffee is the taste itself. It is the only coffee substitute that contains dandelion root. With none of the caffeine and all of the flavor, Dandy Blend is a perfect tea or coffee alternative that you can feel good about indulging in any time of day.

If you love the energy boost….

Black or Chai Tea

The closest to coffee in caffeine content, black tea and chai tea blends can make an easy replacement for the bean. Tea is naturally lower in caffeine than coffee, but these options still provide enough of a boost that you won’t experience the potential detox symptoms of going cold turkey. Bonus – boiling water and throwing in a tea bag with the sweetener of your choice takes so little time, you might have an extra few minutes to meditate!

Try an early morning workout–something as simple as jumping jacks or a quick yoga flow–to spike your body’s natural morning cortisol. A quick blast of energy will wake you up and carry you through your day feeling invigorated and alert.

If you love the ritual….

Matcha is powdered green tea that is whisked with hot water to create a bright green cup of delicious, healing energy. The caffeine in matcha (and all green teas) is slower to release in the body, as opposed to the caffeine in coffee which can spike and crash. If you love the ritual of grinding, brewing, and sipping your morning coffee, give the ancient Japanese ritual of matcha a try– see if your well being and mindfulness improve!

If you love the health benefits….

Chicory Coffee

Chicory coffee is made from the roasted root of the chicory plant. Though it hasn’t been studied extensively, chicory coffee may help improve digestive and brain health, reduce inflammation, and decrease blood sugar. The root contains nutrients like manganese and B6 and is naturally caffeine-free. If you are looking for a hot morning beverage that adds to your overall health, chicory coffee may be a perfect choice. (1)

Mushroom Tea

Mushroom elixirs are gaining popularity in the wellness world. Brands like Four Sigmatic provide alternatives to coffee that not only taste great, but take little time to prepare and offer health benefits like cellular energy support and adaptogenic properties. Four Sigmatic carries a wide variety of products that can make a great replacement for your morning brew — we suggest trying multiple ones until you find the one that best suits your body and mind!

Though it can be challenging to wake up to a darker sky in the fall and winter, the perfect warm beverage or energizing activity can bring inspiration and wellness to your morning routine any time of year. Whatever your motivation for exploring alternatives to coffee, we hope you discover the perfect sip. Cheers!
