My Kitchen Must-Haves

Here is a list of my personal “must haves” of the kitchen.  You know the ones, the items you simply cannot cook without, you use them practically every day.  What are some of your favorites?  Click on any of the titles to learn more about the product and its potential health benefits!

Bragg’s Liquid Aminos

I use this product in everything that I cook, so much that I refer to it strictly as “Bragg’s”.  It is a soy sauce alternative, but it is so much more than that.  I add a splash of it in my dips, in sauteed vegetables, pretty much anything I have on the stove top.  Give it a try, I will bet you have a hard time cooking without it once you start.

Coconut Oil

The oil I can cook with and if I spill any, I just rub it into my skin.  Coconut oil is a wonderful oil that I use in the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.  A coconut oil treatment on your hair every once in awhile can help restore moisture and make your hair feel silky soft!  I use coconut oil as a daily moisturizer as well, especially in the summer.  It helps calm sunburn and really gives your skin a healthy glow.  The stuff I use in the kitchen ( I recommend Nutiva brand in particular) is great for smoothies, a substitute oil in any baking recipe to give your treats some added moisture, and a perfect frying oil that will not burn up as quickly as other oils.  The health benefits of coconut oil just go on and on!  Click on the link to read more about my favorite book on the subject, it also includes a lot of great recipes!

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV’s popularity is rising.  I see it on the shelves of all grocery stores now.  I still only buy the Bragg’s brand, but that is up for you to decide.  ACV is a powerful immune booster and it is great for your stomach.  That is just a few ways it can help you.  Drink a splash of it mixed with water daily to see its true benefits.  For a good energy boosting morning drink, mix a splash of ACV with water and a spoonful of honey.  It tastes like lemonade!  For an added health booster, throw in some cayenne pepper!  I also gargle with ACV for a sore throat, and drink it before a meal to help prevent indigestion and heartburn.  And if you get a stomach bug that wont let you keep anything down, drink a glass of ACV and water.  I have seen it provide immediate relief.  What are some of your ACV cures?  I know there are a lot out there!  I also use it in salad dressing recipes!

Cayenne Pepper

The perfect spice for any meal!  Just a sprinkle gives it the kick you want and it has several health benefits to boot!  My favorite is a morning energy drink consisting of apple cider vinegar, honey, and cayenne pepper.  It peps you up for the day, keeps your appetite at bay, and is good for the digestive system!

Honey

So sweet, so delicious.  Honey is great for the immune system and is a natural anti-bacterial that has many healing benefits.  It is a wonderful sweetener that can be a sugar substitute in any baking recipe, just be sure to figure out how to adjust the recipe for an added liquid sweetener!  Honey on toast is a sweet treat that won’t fill you up, but if you need it to, just add some peanut butter!  I also like to use honey in place of maple syrup occasionally when it comes to pancakes or waffles.  Drink a glass of water mixed with apple cider vinegar and honey as a great way to kick start your morning!  For some added spunk, throw in some cayenne pepper!  Whenever possible, buy local honey.  You are supporting a local business and you get the freshest, most delicious honey!  Any local farmer’s market is sure to have a few vendors with a  healthy supply at a good price!

House of Tsang Spicy Szechuan Sauce

This is just always a favorite to have in the fridge and it lasts me a long time because I use it in small amounts.  I use it in all my stir fry’s.  I use it whenever I am making burgers for the grill, turkey or beef.  It is a great addition to any sauce or soup you are cooking up.  And my favorite, sauteing steak in the cast iron with lots of garlic and butter.  Yuummmm…..

Coconut Milk

I prefer the canned thick stuff, but the unsweetened, unflavored cartons are helpful too!  I like to keep an ice cube tray filled with coconut milk in the freezer.  Makes for great iced coffee or a smoothie ingredient!  Or if you need something a little extra in your sauce or stir fry, just melt in one cube!  I have made simple curry dishes with ease by always having this on hand in the cupboard, fridge, or freezer.

Cinnamon

What can I say?  I loooove cinnamon!  On everything!  Good thing it’s good for me!  I put it in my coffee, my tea, my ice cream, any and every sweet treat baking recipe.  The healing health benefits of cinnamon are seemingly endless.  It is a antimicrobial, anti-fungal, antibacterial, and can enhance your alertness and give your mind a boost!  And did I mention how delicious it is?
